When I say everyone has there part, I mane everyone. There were law cared out around 1912 that children under 9 years of age can not work, and kids that could work ranging from age 9 to 12 could only work 12 hours a day and the pay was roughly 5 dollars a day. But know that times were getting harder because of ww1, children as young as 4 years of age would be out in the streets selling news paper,or sent to work in factories and take over farming in place of there older brothers and fathers at war. Children would also take care of there younger siblings joined long queues(long lines/waiting)for food. Food was scarce because German submerians were sinking ships that were bringing supplies, specifically to Britan thus making it very importabt to grow your own crops. Families needed all the resources and money they could get.

Boy's work-boy tend to do more of the heavy work, like i said before alote of them farm.they farmed pritymuch anywere to everywere they could, from there backyards to parks. Boys were also boy scouts. Boy scouts would do things like carry messiges for war office, they would also gard railway lines, water reservoirs, and stretches of coastline. Also they learned how to send messsages with flags. they would also watch the skies for plain attacks and they would signal there bugles when the air raids were over. Boys were also incuraged to join the Navy around 15 years of age. Boys would earn things like shillings and rations and could earn more things if they learn how to shoot guns and torpedoes (many boys from poor families were more tempted to join). Tho some boys were only training incase germany would invade. you had to be 18 years old to join the army yet boys would lie about there age to help there nation. One boy named George Maher was known to have 13 years of age and said he saw a boy 12 old in the army aswell.
Girl's work-girls did things like knitting things to keep solders warm in the trench. They also did similer things as the boys such as farming, gathering eggs for wonded solders, dilivering important messiges, and also with the flags. some things they did diffrent were colecting bones from meat because the film said it could help make munitions(weapons and amunition). they also dilivered milk and learned first aid and how to us a strecher to carry wonded people. |
